Universal Methods of Ethical Design
Great to receive a copy of Shruthi Chivukula and Colin Gray’s new book Universal Methods of Ethical Design the other day. I’m a fan of the series – Lidwell’s Universal Principles of Design made an impression on me early in my design career – so I’m pleased it’s expanded into the design ethics space.
The authors have assembled 100 design methods, principles, and frameworks to help working designers consider the ethical impacts of their work and resist harmful practices. A couple of my ideas feature, which is flattering, alongside tools like Adversary Personas, the Design Justice principles, and Kat Zhou’s Dichotomy Mapping.
Obviously, tools on their own aren’t enough for responsible design. You also need policies, processes, infrastructure, and occasionally brave conversations about which values you choose to prioritise. But you do need tools too – and this is now, by a distance, the best place to find them. Preorder for 1 April release on Amazon.com.
